Somebody – Help me! I’ve started watching soap operas! My grandmother lived with us until I was a teenager. She watched all the soaps on CBS. She called them her “programs.” She got me started. I’ve watched “The Young and the Restless” since day one. I have worked a full time job since I was 18 – until I had to quit 3 years ago to care for Doug. I don’t know how I found the time to watch soaps, but, by their very nature, you could watch one show a week and keep up to date!
I was watching Y & R (as it’s called now) this morning and could not get over how Old my favorite characters are! Except for good ole Nikki! She’s obviously had tons of work done. Of course, several people who played long time characters have died.
It’s still really hard for me to understand this aging thing. You would think I would have come to terms by now. I’m not vain; I haven’t worn make-up but maybe a handful of times since I quit work. My clothes style is comfort over anything. Have cut my hair short so “styling” is easy. I still color it ‘cause, you know. I won’t give in to gray. And yes, I do realize my “children” are middle aged and I have the potential (solely based on her age) to be a Great Grandmother! But, the other day, in a magazine, they mentioned that Vera Wang was 69 years old. I was infuriated! How dare they! I hope she sues that magazine for printing lies about her. Why I’ve followed her for years! There is absolutely No Way she could be that old! Deep breath. Oh, wait. I’m 69. Shit. Stay tuned.
This is so typical of those of us who did watch soaps! I really didn’t start watching until we moved to Fl when Jeff was a baby. I became hooked and watched two or so for years. Last week I was channel flipping and stopped on Y&R and all of the sudden shook my head and continued to flip. Those people were too old. Yes, I agree Nikki who has obviously dipped deeply into her retirement for a surgery or two. So, for now I’m not starting again but certainly do not look down on those who do. I may be next. Happy Soaping❣
